Don Fruedenstein Memorial Shield
The boys from Bowra Under 16's boarded the bus driven by Jeff Galvin on Friday morning to head to the Northern Beaches of Sydney. After a vigorous training session watched on by the opposition then a cold shower, the boys headed over to the Narrabeen Surf Club for a BBQ and the jersey presentation. It was great to walk into a room packed of supporters of the game and very welcoming smiles and what seemed like old friends.
Presenting the jerseys to both teams was rugby league great Mr Noel Kelly, a Kangaroos hard man named in the team of the century. Also Mark Gerard who was coached by Don Fruedenstien at Narrabeen in the day then went on to play for the Waratah's and now playing overseas.
Zack and Josh Fruedenstein were busy shaking hands and emceeing the night.
The next morning the Narrabeen Sharks Committee ladies cooked up a storm for the boys while setting up for a big day of rugby league from under 6's through to first grade.
After the boys went to the beach for a swim and worked on their tans it was 3pm and time for the game. After a minutes silence for the late great Don Fruedenstein, Narrabeen kicked off. The Bowra boys dug deep and showed the opposition they were not there for a holiday. 16-4 half time score.
Second half Bowra kept up the great attack and defence. Full-time score 34-4.
Tries to Beau Langford, Connor Peterkin, Lachie Jones, Blake Brunsdon, Calijah Craig and Zane Doolan 5 tries from 6 and Man of the Match. A great game to start the season.
A big thankyou to our sponser Ian And Maree Watson from Coast Cert for the playing kits for the boys. Coaches Spike and RJ (and Doot for bringing Spike down) Jeff Galvin for organizing the weekend and driving the bus. The president of the Narrabeen Club, Questo , Mrs Carmel Fruedenstein, Shane Bullock, Bluey Rousel, Ladies in the canteen Mick Atkins for towing the trailer and Fortade Earthmoving and parents who travelled for a great weekend.
2016 Presidents Report
On behalf of the Bowraville Junior Rugby League, I would like to welcome everyone to our presentation day for season 2016.
It has been an honour to be once again chosen as president for this great club.
With over 250 registered players making up 17 teams, with the inclusion of a girl's league tag side our club once again had the highest number of players in Group 2 JRL. This year we were recognised by Country Rugby League by being awarded the best club in the East Coast Division which covers all clubs from Tweed Heads down to Foster from groups 1, 2, 3 & 18. We are very proud to be the inaugural recipients of this award and it is a great tribute to all members past & present.
Our club fielded teams in every age group from7s to 16s which included 3 teams in our under 7s, 2 teams in under 8s, 9s, 11s & 13s divisions and the inclusion of a girls league tag team. I also cannot forget our future champions as part of our Tiger Cubs programme run by David & Carlie which has once again shown how much fun you can have playing footy. With that, I would like acknowledge the dedication and hard work of all our coaches and managers for taking on the responsibility of guiding our young players throughout the season.
This year we had 5 teams represent our club in the semi-finals so congratulations to the players & coaching staff. For those teams that did not reach the finals you did our club proud each & every week. The under 12s were defeated in the minor semi-final & put up a great effort on the day. Our under 11s gold side made it to the preliminary final but were met by a very determined Smithtown side that ended our boys season & went on to become premiers. Our under 10s, 14s & 15s went on to contest the Grand Final. The 10s started grand final day off with success for Bowra winning a nail biter in extra time 22-18 against Nambucca Heads. Our under 14s came up against their arch enemy all year, Kempsey. Our boys going down in a very tough game 41-34. The undefeated 15s side proved how good a side they are by defeating the Woolgoolga side 42-22.
Congratulations also to our players who represented Group 2 throughout the year and also to those who have been chosen for 2017.
As we all know it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to run our club and on behalf of our members I would like to thank all our committee and many volunteers who give up there time to help the club in any way they can. Home game days are an early start so thank you to Greg Tape, Keith Buckley, Dean Hillary, Justin Single, Dane Luffman and all who help set up, pack up and maintain the fields. Thank you to Sharon Atkins and all our 1st aid officers for giving their time to assist our injured players. To our referees, touch judges, league safe, time keepers and ground managers who have, at times had to deal with some not so pleasant encounters I thank you all.
To our many sponsors, we appreciate your ongoing support of our great club and look forward to you and maybe some new ones assisting us in 2017 and beyond. Our sponsors are all listed in our weekly bulletin & this year book, so please show your appreciation by supporting them. While on the bulletin, as well as acknowledging our many sponsors it also keeps us up to date with ongoing and up coming events as well as match reports so I would like to thank Craig Doolan for his time and effort through out the year as well as Jodie & Dan Moore & their boys for assembling the books each week.
One of our main areas to assist our club financially is through our great canteen and with that I would like to say a very big thank you to Donna Doolan for all her hard work and organisation as well as her band of volunteers. Another very important job is registrar so to Lisa McKay we thank you for doing such an excellent job at registering all our players. To Jon Kenny as treasurer thank you for keeping our financial records in tact.
Thank you to Dave Callaway for the use of your sound system for presentation day, your ongoing support is very much appreciated.
I would like to personally give a big thank you to Donna Willer & Danny Doolan who have once again been a great help throughout the year and I would like to let them know how much I appreciated there help.
As we all know this club has been built on hard work and dedication in getting as many kids as possible involved in playing rugby league for over 44 years, this hard work can only be done by volunteers who offer a great deal of time to achieve this goal and in saying that there are a number of these volunteers who do not have children playing for this club. So if you think you are able to help out in any capacity weather it is on game days or by joining a great committee please feel free to do so, it can be sometimes fun as well as rewarding. Our AGM will be held on 16 October, 2.00pm at the Bowraville Ex-Services Club. Remember, many hands make light work.
Finally I would like to wish our 16s who are leaving the Bowra Juniors all the best for there future both in rugby league and in life and hope you have enjoyed your time with this great club. Good luck boys. To everyone else I hope you all have a great day and safe off season and hope to see you all again in 2017.
Yours in Rugby League
KNOCK EM DOWN BOWRA.
