We went for a little drive south on Saturday to face the Kempsey Dragons on their home turf. A small bribe of guaranteed KFC on the way home in exchange for a good performance, saw the mood in my car reach fever pitch.
Kempsey kicked off & Bowra went straight on the attack. After some big go forward from Riley Mylrea, Luke Fitz & Zayla Castle, Locky Craggs kicked to the sideline for a flying Blake Sampson who scooped up the ball & sprinted 30 meters to score under the posts. Bowra 6-0. Kempsey replied with a try 6-4.
Rhys Ballard made a barnstorming run carrying 4 Kempsey players 20 metres or more. This set up Zac Single's first try. Close to the line Zac is almost unstoppable. Bowra 10-4. Kempsey score again 10-8.
Finn Stephens has his forward pack running really straight & hard. This team is blessed with great organisers in the first receivers roll.
Blake Sampson scores again after a dazzling run. Half time Bowra 14-8.
Running with the breeze saw Bowra completely out play Kempsey in the second half. Caleb Wassens, playing his first game back, split them up the middle & was in the clear only fullback to beat. With so many quick boys in our side this is where we need them backing up the ball runner.
Zac scored his second try 2 tackles later. 18-8 Bowra.
Hugh Ahearn took some tough runs up the middle & Bailey Hicks excited the crowd with his blinding speed.
Some stiff defence (yes) saw Bowra get the ball again. Then Jake Jones started a beautiful backline movement (Jake knows how to get the ball out wide). Tom Keough ran onto the ball at pace & went on a 50 meter run all the way to the try line. TRY!!!!! Bowra 22-8. Kempsey scored 22-12.
Rhys Ballard finished Kempsey off with yet another barging run carrying Kempsey players all the way to the try line. What a run! What a try! What a game!
Fulltime Bowra 28 Kempsey 12 BOOM CHICKA BOOM!!!
Bowra took on the defending premiers Sawtell at Hennessy Tape Oval in overcast conditions.
This was a very entertaining game to watch as both teams went try for try. Sawtell ended up 1 try ahead at fulltime.
If Bowra tackle a bit more with their shoulders & arms, & a lot less with their fingers, they will see a massive improvement in their results.
Highlights of the game;
Bryce Pike's crunching tackles stopping Sawtell in their tracks.
Elija Cooper's runs making huge meters (again).
Luke Fitzgerald much improved all round game. Running straight & then a little step is much better than running sideways.
Finn Stephens grubber kick & regather to score a brilliant individual TRY!!!!
Blake Sampson awesome game in both attack & defence. This boy has got a lot of talent. Come watch him play.
Hudson Garzoli every time he touched the ball he either scored or made 50 meters. Must get more ball to him.
Ben Whalen 2 good runs today. Safe hands when passed the ball.
Oshay Tyerman's try saving tackle on Stevie. Stevie made a bust & Oshay chased him down & made a copy book tackle from behind. Now ladies & gents, that takes COURAGE!!!

Bowra U12's finally got to play their first comp game on Saturday & it was no easy feat coming up against last year's grandfinalists Coffs Harbour on their home turf.
Great early defence from Zac Single, Locky Craggs & Rhys Ballard had Bowra on top.
Bowra were now attacking the Coffs try line. The ball went to Hudson Garzoli. Hudson weaved, stepped & with brute force, crashed over to score. Bowra 4-0.
With 23 kids on the sign on sheet, Bowra had to do a lot of rotating of players, this seemed to upset the teams rhythm (its no wonder).
Coffs scored 3 run away tries from Bowra dropped ball.
Finn Stephens was organising the team well & was dangerous every time he ran the footy. Dane Cooper's tackling has improved from last year.
Then Jake Jones scored a try after backing up a rampaging Riley Mylrea. Big Ryles charged at the line & then flicked a pass straight onto Jakes chest. Unstoppable!!!
Some strong running from Jacob Moore, Blake Sampson & James White saw Bowra in good position. Jake saw a gap out wide & threw a beautiful long pass to Oshay Tyerman who crashed over in the corner.
Elijah Cooper received the $5 meal voucher sponsored by NAMBUCCA HOTEL (did you know you can get a snitzel or fish & chips or pasta for $5 at Nambucca Hotel WOW!!!)
Elijah ran hard up the middle into the strong Coffs defence all day.
